Nothing wrong with that, but not everyone likes dancing and even the people that do don't necessarily want to spend hours continuously on the dance floor. At some point people will start to look around for something else to do. The non-dancers especially could start to look at watches and wonder what would be a polite time to leave. The crowd thins and the atmosphere is lost.

Why does a fun casino work so well at a Christmas party?

I've provided fun casino entertainment at all sorts of Christmas parties over the years. We've set up casino tables inside offices, people's homes, restaurants, large venues, hotels, social clubs, pub basements. You name it, we've probably set up a roulette table in it. Just to explain, the tables are in manageable sized parts and are assembled on site. If you can walk through a door, we can carry the table parts into that space.

Christmas parties have a different atmosphere from birthday parties, weddings and many corporate events. For some reason, people really do let their hair (and their mothers) down. Free drinks may have something to do with it. A fun casino works particularly well because guests don't have to commit themselves to one activity for the whole evening. You don't have to sit down and play for three hours, you can come and go as you please. A guest might spend ten minutes at one table or an hour. They may play blackjack for a while and then decide to see whether they have better luck at roulette. That flexibility is what makes a fun casino such good Christmas party entertainment.

Are roulette and blackjack good games for a Christmas party?

That’s an easy question to answer, yes. In fact they are the first games I recommend for a typical Christmas party because they are quick to learn, easy to play and they keep moving. That last point is important because if you're entertaining a large number of guests, you don't want everyone waiting around for half an hour to get involved. With roulette and blackjack , guests can learn the basics very quickly and start playing.

However, some games are slower and require a little more concentration. That doesn't mean they don't work, it depends on the event and that number of guests/number of tables ratio. I will not turn up with games that people give up on after five minutes, my aim is to thrill and amuse as many guests as I can.

For example, we have a business in central London with around 20 employees who enjoy a poker-only Christmas evening every year. That's perfect for them because everyone can settle into the evening and enjoy the game.

At the other end of the scale, the Haas F1 team have had six casino tables for nearly 300 guests, giving us the opportunity to include some of the slower games, such as Casino Stud Poker, alongside the quicker games.

That's why there isn't really a one size fits all answer, the best combination of games depends on how many guests you have and how long the casino has to run. Roulette and blackjack hire is a very good place to start.

What happens if the guests have had a few drinks?

Let's be realistic, it is Christmas and at most parties the hospitality would have started before the casino opens. This is another reason why simple, quick games such as blackjack and roulette work so well. Games like Texas Hold'em poker and Craps can require more concentration and are slower. Our croupiers are friendly, professional and used to dealing with all sorts of situations. If somebody has enjoyed the Christmas hospitality and is feeling a little tipsy, we simply guide them through the game like anyone else. There is no need to know the rules before you arrive. We explain it, maybe have a little demonstration and then we get on with having fun.

Will a fun casino work for a small Christmas party?

Definitely! You don't need 500 guests to have a casino. Last Christmas (and the Christmas before), we provided a poker evening for around 20 employees in a pub basement in central London. In Maidstone had blackjack and roulette running during the daytime for a similar number of guests inside a communal office area. At the other end of the scale, we've entertained 700 guests and more.

The important thing isn't simply the number of people, it's matching the number of tables to the number of guests and the amount of time they have to play. As a general guide, for a three-hour casino, I usually work on around 50-60 guests per table but that can be adapted. If the casino is only running for a shorter time, you may need more tables because the same number of people are trying to play in less time. Experience is important here.

"Not everybody will want to play" and that is true and reasonable, but I can guarantee that 80% people will want to at least have a go once they see the casino tables in action, and those that don’t play will have someone asking whether they can have their fun money for another go. So the casino tables are as busy as if every single guest is playing.

One casino table for 800 guests? Please don't!

One of the biggest mistakes I see is being unrealistic about the number of guests and the number of tables. Last year, I had a prospective client whose plans changed dramatically. They started by discussing six tables, which was ok, everyone has a budget and we could adapt to that. Then he wanted the number of tables reduced to four. That was really stretching things. However, he later wanted to drop to one table, for 800 guests!

That would not be a fun casino experience, nobody would have enjoyed that. It was recipe for chaos and I have a duty of care for my staff. Imagine one bar with one bar person at an event for 800, each guest has a free drink token and they had to stay at the bar while they finished their drink. There would be a lot of frustration and pushing. That is not a festive scenario.

In any case, during the busy Christmas party season, demand is also so high that Mock Vegas operates a minimum two table hire on weekend dates.

My advice is to tell us honestly how many guests you're expecting and how long the casino will be open and we'll help you work out what is realistic. That is much better than discovering halfway through the evening that 200 people are standing at an overcrowded blackjack table wondering when they can get anywhere near it.

When should the casino run?

We always quote for our standard three hour casino. I find this works best after dinner and speeches are finished, alongside the dancing and any other entertainment. Remember, as long as they cash in their chips before leaving any table they can go off for a dance, get another egg nog and mince pie, come back to the casino, have a chat, another dance, the casino again…. It keeps the room moving, the party never gets stale, and it gives the non-dancers something to do. The best Christmas party entertainment gives guests open-ended options.

Give your fun casino a Christmas makeover

One thing about fun casino events is that they can easily be adapted to suit the occasion and Christmas gives you plenty of opportunities. You could have bespoke Christmas-themed fun money with the company logo with snow falling on it. Maybe a Santa hat added to the party host, or the boss if they have a sense of humour. You could also have seasonal spot prizes during the evening.

Christmas chocolates such as those Christmas puddings or snowmen

Small festive gifts

And, of course, a prize for the luckiest player

You don't need to spend a fortune, in fact keeping prizes light-hearted is better. A fun casino should feel exciting but it shouldn't become a highly competitive survival programme.

Choosing the right venue matters

Another mistake I see is choosing a venue that is simply too big for the number of guests. A huge room with 50 people in it can feel rather empty, and atmosphere is everything. You want guests to walk into the room and feel that something special is happening. The casino tables help enormously with this, particularly when they're positioned together and the excitement from one table spreads to another.

Apart from the obvious standard considerations, like the bar, dance floor, DJ, think about how easy it is for suppliers to get their equipment into the building. This is something people understandably don't always think about when they first see a beautiful venue.

Before booking, visit the venue yourself if possible. Walk through where guests will enter. Then think about where suppliers will enter. If getting a large suitcase into the room looks difficult, imagine trying to move casino tables and DJ equipment. A little planning beforehand can save a lot of headaches later and some suppliers will turn down an enquiry or inflate a quote simply because of experience of certain venues.

Don't underestimate how long dinner will take

Formal, sit-down Christmas dinners always look good on the invitation but in my experience they can overrun, and then there may be speeches and end of year awards. That is not a problem, we will be ready for the scheduled start of your casino, but we can make it a ‘soft start’ whereas we take our cue from when the coffees come out for example. It is a good idea to liaise with your suppliers and let them know what is going on, you don’t want the DJ to blast out ‘All I Want For Christmas’ just before the host or CEO wants to say a few words.

Book early for Christmas

This is probably the most important practical piece of advice in this article - book everything early. My theory is that parents look at the calendar when the kids go back to school wondering when they are off again and realise Christmas is approaching. After New Year’s Eve, the weekend before the weekend before Christmas Day (if that makes sense) is the next busiest time of the year for Mock Vegas. Unless there has been a cancellation, it probably won't. Early enquiries can make planning the event much easier for yourself.

I'm probably not going to surprise you by saying yes, but after decades of experience in real casinos and hundreds of fun casino events, I genuinely think a casino works particularly well at Christmas. It gives every guest something interactive to do. It works for people who love dancing and people who would rather avoid it. Complete beginners can join in, experienced players can enjoy showing off, guests can come and go as they please, and whether you have 20 people in a pub basement or 400 guests in a large venue the casino can be adapted to suit the event.

Most importantly, it creates atmosphere and that is what Christmas party entertainment should be about. Getting people involved, talking, mingling and making sure they have something to remember other than the slightly questionable photograph taken falling into a taxi at the end of the evening.

If you're planning a James Bond theme party, you've already got a pretty good starting point.

James Bond, glamorous guests, Aston Martins, casinos, cocktails, tuxedos, beautiful dresses and enough intrigue to make everyone feel like they've wandered onto the set of a 007 film. But how do you turn a James Bond party from simply looking the part into an evening that your guests actually want to get involved in and remember?

After providing entertainment at hundreds of events, including plenty of Bond and Casino Royale themed parties, I've learned that the secret is to get your guests immersed in the world of 007. Of course, a casino is part of that.

With professional croupiers, roulette, blackjack and other games available, Bond themed decorations and a few carefully chosen extras, you can turn your party into your own little Casino Royale. Start with the dress code

If you want my advice, make the James Bond theme a fancy dress party. This has consistently produced some of the best Bond parties we've been involved with. Of course, there will be plenty of James Bonds and you’ll have glamorous Bond girls, some Blofelds complete with white cats and at least one Oddjob. At one event, one guest turned up in full scuba gear, complete with flippers and a duck on his head (Thunderball, if you’re wondering).

The great thing about fancy dress is that it gives your guests something to talk about before the casino even opens. You can even make the best costume a competition in itself. To be honest, the ladies dressed as East European spies in military uniforms or as a honeytrap generally put rather more effort into it than the men.

Bring in a proper fun casino

If you want your Bond party to feel like Casino Royale but with no financial risk, a fun casino is probably why you’re reading this. James Bond famously played baccarat, craps and poker, but there's a practical problem with both those games at a party, they can be very slow. If you've got a room full of guests who are curious and eager to play, you don't want half of them standing around waiting for a seat at the poker table. For a busy party, I generally recommend roulette and blackjack hire because they're quick to learn, fast-moving and allow lots of guests to get involved. If you are planning a very large event, Mock Vegas have the tables and experienced croupiers to deal those slow games, just as long as everyone gets the chance to play.

Unlike a serious casino, nobody needs to know what they're doing before they arrive. Our professional croupiers explain the games, demonstrate what to do and keep everything moving. You don’t to overdo it, covering every available surface in 007 logos and trying to turn your living room into the interior of a Japanese volcano launching rockets. A few good-quality, well-placed details generally look much better than turning the room into a Bond-themed jumble sale.

The best Bond parties don't necessarily have one enormous gimmick.

Instead, lots of little details work together. Perhaps your invitation says: Message from Moneypenny – M has an urgent mission for you. Your guest RSVP accepting. They arrive in Bond-style fancy dress, Bond music is playing, an Aston Martin (possibly an inflatable one) is waiting outside, the casino tables are ready, everyone receives Bond themed fun money, the dining tables are named after Bond films, the croupiers are dressed appropriately (as always).

Don't make the decorations too complicated

Here's one piece of advice from experience if you're having your Bond party at home – don’t hang decorations across doorways. Those strips of shiny tinsel and similar decorations look fun when you put them up but unfortunately they have a remarkably short life expectancy at a party. I’d give it give it about 30 minutes before they’re lying on the floor while everybody walks over them and they become a trip hazard. You want your guests to feel as though they're entering Casino Royale, not watching where they can put their feet.

After decades of experience in real casinos and hundreds of fun casino events, I've seen what gets guests involved and what leaves them standing around wondering when the buffet opens. The good news is that you do not need to spend a fortune. A few carefully chosen touches, a professional fun casino with friendly croupiers can inspire enthusiasm in guests and turn a good party into a brilliant one.

Get Your Guests Into the Vegas Spirit

The easiest way to create an atmosphere is to involve your guests before they even arrive. How about some fancy dress? Leave it open to interpretation and everyone can work it out for themselves. If you have a low table to guest number ratio to entertain and the venue will be relatively quiet (background music) then Craps and Texas poker can work. Of course, Texas poker is great on a specific poker night!

Choosing the right venue for a casino-themed party can enhance the evening and save you money. Of course, you want somewhere that looks fantastic so your guests will walk in and think, "Wow!" However, there's an aspect that many clients forget that can have an impact - what is it like for the suppliers who have to get everything into the building? You may think that is not your concern, but it can affect the price and carefully thought out timings for your event. After decades of providing fun casino hire, roulette hire and blackjack hire for weddings, parties and corporate events, I've learnt that the prettiest venue isn't necessarily the easiest one to work in. Unfortunately, the difficulties don't always become apparent until after you've booked it, so before you fall in love with the chandeliers, marble floors and spectacular views, here are some things I'd recommend checking.

How much space do you need for a fun casino?

Let's start with the obvious one. You need enough room for your casino tables , your guests and all the other entertainment you've booked. As a rough guide, allow around 10ft x 7ft (3m x 2.2m) per casino table. That is enough room for the table, the croupier on one side and players on the other. If you're standing in a venue trying to visualise that amount of space, here's my slightly less technical method that sounds weird but gives a good mental picture. If you can imagine a large single bed with people standing around the edges that's roughly the footprint we're talking about. If you plan for one or two casino tables it’s not a good idea to place it/them in the centre of the room. It's amazing how many clients do not talk to us when making a room plan, perhaps thinking 'they're just tables like any other table'. If the setting up time is tight and you've planned a totally unsuitable space for a supplier that could upset the whole plan and delay all the entertainment because a hasty on the spot re-plan is necessary. You might also have a dance floor, DJ or band, photobooth, bar, dining tables, decorations and plenty of guests wandering around to consider. Ideally, casino tables should be together or relatively close to each other. That creates more atmosphere and makes the casino look like part of the event rather than two random tables. Try to position the casino away from loudspeakers. Our professional croupiers aren't just there to deal cards and spin roulette wheels. We explain the games, chat to guests and have a bit of banter with them and that is really difficult if we’re three feet away from speakers cranked up to eleven, your guests aren't going to hear a word we're saying. Modern hotels often make excellent casino venues. We are used to all kinds of circumstances so this advice is desirable but not essential .

In my experience, some of the easiest venues to work in are modern hotels with good transport links and parking. Even better is a venue where the casino can be set up in an adjoining room or in an area that can be partitioned off as this gives you the best of both worlds. The casino is part of the party, keeping everyone in or close to the dance floor but not sitting on top of the band or DJ. Guests can hear the croupier explaining how to play blackjack or roulette, while still being close enough to enjoy everything else happening at the event.

The question most people forget to ask

When you visit a venue, you will be asking;

Will my guests like it?

Does it look good?

Is there enough room?

Is the food good?

Is there a bar?

Is there somewhere for people to dance?

You are asking the right questions, but add another, 'what is access like for suppliers?' This can have a significant impact on the cost of your fun casino hire and other entertainment. Things such as red routes, pedestrianised streets, restricted loading, no parking, upper floor function rooms with no or small lift, long corridors, restricted supplier access times, difficult loading bays, equipment that has to be carried a long distance, can all mean extra staff, extra time, and for the client, extra cost.

I recently had a client who wanted their casino at a venue in the heart of London, between Bond Street and Piccadilly. Mock Vegas have been to many, many venues, but not this one. This is when experience kicks in and I investigated access. The venue was in a pedestrianised area with kerb markings that meant there was no loading at all on any day at any time, apart from one small section of road. I contacted the venue several times and left four messages asking for access details and a call back. I heard nothing. This is a red flag. So I used a trick up my sleeve and asked my client to contact them. Venues do not want to lose clients. Low and behold the venue got back to me immediately. Once we finally established the access arrangements, things were about as awkward as I'd expected. We would have needed to carry the equipment around 200 metres through Bond Street Christmas shoppers, followed by four flights of stairs. The general manager was vague too, plenty of "should be" and "probably" answers. I was told I could probably park closer because "everybody does it." I am confident some do, but I am also confident the general manager would have no idea whether everybody also got a parking fine (or two, for unloading and then loading again at the end of the event), clamped or even had their vehicle removed. I had to go back to the client and revise the quotation to include additional staff to move the equipment.

Never assume that a venue's access arrangements are someone else's problem. They can become part of your entertainment bill .

A beautiful venue can be a logistical nightmare

One of the biggest mistakes I see is choosing a venue entirely because it looks fantastic. I fully understand why, but think about what happens before your guests arrive. The casino tables, equipment, DJ equipment, decorations, photobooth and other entertainment all have to get into the building somehow and probably roughly at the same time if there is a room turnaround.

You could have the most spectacular event venue in London, perhaps a Thames riverboat, but at which pier does the supplier stop? Where does the equipment get unloaded? Where does the van go afterwards? How far does someone have to carry everything? Will the pier be packed with tourists? If the answer involves hundreds of metres, multiple flights of stairs and a parking fine, the spectacular view also becomes a spectacular bill. Luckily some piers are much better than others and further up the river some boats have their own dedicated moorings with easy access.

One London venue that got everything right

It's not all bad news with older buildings. Many historic venues in central London can be difficult because they were built long before anyone had considered moving modern event equipment through them. Banks, warehouses and other historic buildings have often been converted into spectacular event spaces. One ex-finance house is absolutely marvellous (see images). It has everything you would expect from an impressive London venue - beautiful wood panelling, high ceilings, opulent interior.

From a supplier’s perspective it is impressive too, because the goods entrance was just across the pavement from the road, straight to the area where the casinos can be set up. Zero additional access cost for the client. That's the sort of thing you don't necessarily notice or even think of when you're looking at photographs of a venue online trying to arrange a corporate event with a budget.

At the other end of the scale there is the converted brewery...

I've also worked at several events in a converted old brewery in central London with wonderful event rooms. It does look good but getting equipment in and out is another story. One tiny loading bay and one lift for event rooms that can accommodate hundreds of guests. The lift was always in use but once you had got the equipment up to the correct floor there were narrow corridors containing venue staff, chairs and trolleys. Imagine trying to manoeuvre several large casino tables through there while other suppliers are attempting the same thing. This all takes time. If you've got a 7pm start, the clock doesn't care how beautiful the venue is.

Ask for a blank room plan

Here's something very simple that can make organising your event much easier, ask the venue for a blank room plan and send it to your suppliers. Tell them:

How many guests you're expecting

What entertainment you've booked

What furniture will be in the room

Where the dance floor will be

Where the bar will be

Where fire exits and access doors are

What time suppliers can access the venue

Then ask all your suppliers where they would recommend positioning their equipment. We can tell you how much space the roulette and blackjack tables need, your photobooth company can tell you where they need to go, your DJ or band can advise on their requirements, and then gradually you have a much better idea of whether the room actually works.

Don't forget the electricity

Mock Vegas always use lamps on the tables so everyone can see what is going on even when the lights are down low. We don't require enormous amounts of power, we carry extension cables and all equipment is PAT tested. Lighting, music, a photobooth and other entertainment may also need electrical points.

What about the guests?

Visit the venue yourself.

How do guests get there?

Is there parking?

Is public transport convenient?

Are there lots of stairs?

Is there a lift?

Will older guests or anyone with mobility difficulties be comfortable?

Perhaps most importantly, how will everyone get home?

A beautiful venue might look wonderful on Instagram but it becomes a concern when everyone is trying to find a taxi.

Check what happens after the event

Here's another question that people often don't think to ask, can suppliers collect their equipment straight after the event? Some venues have strict policies about this. For example, the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane has a policy requiring suppliers to return the following day because of restrictions relating to the residents opposite. That will mean an additional charge.

What if the room needs to be turned around?

Some venues are brilliant at this. You might have dinner in one area, then guests move to the bar or lounge while the room is transformed. Dining tables are folded away while suppliers come in and set up the entertainment and suddenly you have a completely different room for the evening. This can be an excellent space solution, but it needs to be planned. Your suppliers will need to know when they can arrive and how much time they have. If your casino hire is supposed to start at 8pm and we're still trying to get equipment through the kitchen at 7:55pm, it's going to be a late start.

Don't let the venue's maximum capacity dictate everything

Have a realistic idea of how many people will attend your event. People may drop out which is disappointing but normal and from experience you would much rather see a room that comfortably accommodates your expected numbers than squeeze everyone into the smallest possible space. Venues will usually give you capacities for seated and standing events, along with information about dance floors and other layouts. Remember that the venue's maximum capacity isn't necessarily the ideal capacity for a party. A room that can technically hold 200 people doesn't mean you can comfortably fit those 200 along with a dance floor, a bar, a band, a photobooth and four casino tables into it.

My biggest piece of advice

After decades of providing fun casino hire, roulette hire and blackjack hire, the biggest lesson I've learnt is this:

Talk to your suppliers before you commit to the venue.

Send them the room plan.

Tell them how many guests you're expecting.

Tell them what else is going into the room.

Ask what they need.

And, above all, ask the venue what is access like for suppliers. Don't just accept vague answers, if possible walk the route yourself. If it involves a dozen corridors, a kitchen, a goods lift that's barely large enough for four people and a maze of trolleys, imagine yourself doing it with a collection of IKEA flat-pack furniture and you've got a trolley and someone helping you. Could you reasonably get it from outside the building into the room? If the answer is no, your suppliers probably won't find it particularly easy either.

Absolutely, choose the venue with your guests in mind, but also nod your head toward your suppliers. When the practical side has been properly planned that's a much better reason for your guests to remember the night.

Can You Have a Fun Casino Outside? Yes... But Only If You Do It Properly!

It's a warm, balmy summer evening, the drinks are flowing, guests are enjoying themselves under a beautiful marquee and the roulette wheel is spinning as the sun begins to set. With everything in place and coming together it’s the perfect setting for a fun casino hire. However, after supplying fun casino entertainment, roulette hire and blackjack hire across Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex, London and the South of England for decades, I've learnt the Great British Summer doesn't care how much planning you've done.

Outdoor casino parties can be fantastic but without a few simple precautions they can become memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Here is What Mock Vegas Learnt the Hard Way

Gazebos will not work - several years ago we were booked for a summer party at a private home. The casino tables were positioned beneath a lightweight gazebo on a large patio. It had been beautiful weather for days, so nobody was particularly worried. While I was driving to another venue I received a call from the croupiers hired to deal on the tables. Shortly before they got there a sudden heavy summer downpour had arrived and the weight of the water collapsed the roof of the gazebo, dumping gallons of water straight onto thousands of pounds worth of professional casino equipment.

The tables were ruined and therefore the casino never opened. The client had paid for entertainment that simply couldn't happen now and I had an expensive repair and replacement bill.

Rain Isn't Always the Problem

Another customer booked exactly what I recommended, a proper marquee and they had borrowed a powerful heater (this was in February). Keeping everyone warm is obvious but for the croupier it is difficult to grip cards and chips with cold fingers, which slows the games right down.

Unfortunately though, he had skimped on the flooring. After days of rain he had laid old domestic carpet directly onto the lawn, which seemed fine at first. Then guests started arriving and entering the warm marquee. The ground underneath was saturated and the water gradually seeped through the carpet until everyone was standing in nearly an inch of freezing water. Ladies wearing elegant shoes found their heels disappearing into the soggy carpet and their toes were frozen. Before long many guests abandoned the casino and headed back into the warm, dry house. Nobody wanted to stay out there for long.

What About Playing Poker/Cards Outside?

People often imagine blackjack hire on an open terrace or poker beneath the stars, but it’s all spoilt because the cards can literally blow off the table! Even a gentle breeze can turn cards over, exposing a hand. I have heard of swim-up blackjack tables in Vegas but have you ever heard of a real open-air casino? Real casinos don't have open windows for exactly the same reason. If the venue has exposed sides the fun casino tables need to be positioned well away from them where the air is still, that works fine.

Your Casino Tables Aren't Like Ordinary Furniture

Mock Vegas casino tables are purpose built professional equipment worth thousands of pounds. Just like tables in a real casino, they have specialist cloth playing surfaces that don't mix well with water. We don't even allow drinks on the tables. The tables are also assembled on site. They slot together and are secured with brackets, so if it suddenly starts raining they need to be dismantled first, you can't simply pick one up and dash indoors. That's why prevention is always far better than panic.

One Booking Where I Had To Insist.....

A City law firm had hired us for an afternoon event on a spectacular roof terrace high above the city. The weather was glorious, around 30°C, and the terrace was sheltered from the wind. Obviously the floor was level, not a hint of rain, but there was one problem - before they even formalised booking I'd explained that our croupiers would need protection from direct sunshine. It’s common sense that standing in one spot for three hours in extreme heat simply isn't safe. When we arrived, they pointed us towards the full sun terrace because the shaded area had been reserved for the caterers, so I reminded them about our very first conversation. Their response was, "The catering staff don't mind." I had to politely point out that the catering staff were based in the shade and moving around all afternoon. Our croupiers would be standing in exactly the same place for three hours, in direct sunlight. I summed up my case by pointing out that they must understand my concern because they had thoughtfully provided sunscreen and sun hats for their guests.

To their credit, they quickly arranged large patio parasols. Croupiers and players alike stayed comfortable, nobody got sunburnt and the casino was a success.

When Outdoor Casinos Work Brilliantly

Mock Vegas has delivered plenty of wonderful outdoor events. Many venues now have beautiful semi-permanent marquees, sailcloth tents and giant tipis. Provided the casino tables are positioned away from exposed openings, with flooring and heating if needed, they create a fun and exciting atmosphere. Sound carries on a warm summer evening and there really is something special about hearing cheers drifting through an open marquee when the roulette ball drops .

My Advice After Decades in the Business

If you're planning outdoor fun casino hire, keep it simple:

Hire a professional marquee with sides. A lightweight gazebo will not do.

Make sure there's a proper, level(ish) floor. Your patio?

Arrange some kind of heating even during summer (you know yourself evenings can turn very chilly).

Plan a casino space away from exposed openings.

Think about shade as well as rain.

Remember that guest comfort is important, or they’ll go indoors or go home!

How Do We Decide the Luckiest Players?

People often imagine that we simply look at the biggest pile of chips but there’s a bit more to it than that. Every table has a casino cheque book. When players leave a table, our croupiers issue them with a cheque showing the value of the chips they handed in. They can then go off for a dance or go to another game and use their cheque to get chips on that table.

At the end of the evening, our team compares notes. One croupier may say "I cashed someone out for 2,000 on Roulette" but another might say, "Yes... but they came over to blackjack and lost the lot!" so we need to narrow down the big cheques that have not been handed back in. Once that has been done (it doesn’t take long for experienced croupiers) we can identify your overall luckiest player(s).

You can have different categories. If appropriate, perhaps the luckiest guy and the luckiest lady, maybe the luckiest person under 16 if you have some children coming to a wedding. It's a simple system that has worked really well for years.

One of Our Favourite Moments...

You’d be surprised how often this happens - an eight-year-old wins the bottle of champagne at a wedding. They are absolutely thrilled of course and their parents are too. After all, they can’t drink it, can they? We usually suggest the youngster "sells" the bottle back to Mum and Dad in exchange for a video game or another suitable reward. Everyone understands and are still smiling, the child still feels like the evening's biggest winner and it's another memorable Mock Vegas moment.

Why We Say "Luckiest Player" Instead of "Best Player"

This is something we feel strongly about throughout our decades in the industry - we never describe someone as the ‘ best player’. This is because our events are not real gambling and calling somebody the "best player" suggests skill and could imply that casino games are something they could master. In reality, our casino nights are about entertainment, socialising and enjoying the experience and that is why we always announce the ‘ Luckiest Player’. It's a much more accurate description and perfectly matches the spirit of the evening.

Do Not Have Separate Roulette and Blackjack Winners

This is common mistake and unfortunately that simply does not work. Guests move freely between our roulette , blackjack and other casino tables throughout the evening. That’s just what we want them to do. Someone might build a healthy win on roulette but lose it all on blackjack, or vice versa. Since everyone plays multiple games, separate game winners simply aren't practical. We have no way to track who won how much on which game. Instead, we recommend recognising the overall luckiest player (or perhaps the top three, which is more than enough).

The "Unluckiest Player" Prize

Occasionally a client asks if we can award a prize to the worst player. I’m afraid this doesn’t quite work either, but there is away round that. Let’s say you have 200 guests all starting with exactly the same amount of fun money . If you're rewarding the luckiest player, technically everyone else lost the same amount – you’d need 199 ‘worst player’ prizes!

So instead, we suggest an ‘ Unluckiest Player’ prize. There's almost always one confident guest who builds their chips up nicely before dramatically pushing everything onto red….. but black comes in. Those moments become legendary and always get a huge laugh, but just one huge groan. Mock Vegas croupiers are excellent at spotting these memorable moments. We can pick that player out for the wooden spoon prize.

Here are the things I would look for if I were hiring a casino entertainment business myself.

Experience Isn't Just About Years - It's About Knowing What Works

Here’s an example where Mock Vegas experience helped. The organisers of a social club in Kent had expected a good turnout of members from conversations and interest from members. Unfortunately, between World Cup football, glorious weather and the whole area's water supply being cut off earlier that day, attendance was much lower than expected. The original plan was to spread three casino tables across three different rooms, but with reduced numbers, that would have left every room feeling half empty. That would make things difficult if you want to have an exciting atmosphere.

So instead I suggested creating a casino ‘pit’ in the bar area, arranging the three tables in a circle just as you'd find in a real casino. We also gave those who did attend more fun money to use on the tables. This worked out really well, when the blackjack table erupted with cheers, the excitement spread across the whole casino. Guests stayed together and the room felt alive. Nobody remembers how many people were missing. Disappointing numbers, which wasn’t anybody’s fault, but those there talked about having a fantastic evening. Experience helps - suggesting options when things haven’t gone to plan.

One thing I've always believed is that if you look after your croupiers, they'll look after your guests. The expert guide to choosing the right number of blackjack, roulette and other fun casino games for a fantastic night

"We're expecting around 120 guests... how many casino tables do we need?" is a question I'm often asked. The answer isn't simply a case of dividing the number of guests by the number of seats around a blackjack table. After decades working in both real and fun casinos, and having provided entertainment for hundreds of events across London, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Sussex, Kent, Dorset and the South of England, I can tell you there's a little more science (and quite a lot of experience) involved. The good news is it's my job to work it out for you.

My Rule of Thumb

As a general guide, I recommend one casino table for every 50-60 guests. That gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the casino over a typical three-hour event without spending the evening waiting to play. That ratio be stretched sometimes. My job isn't simply to hire you casino tables - it's to make sure your guests actually have a brilliant evening.

The Biggest Mistake I Hear...

"Not everyone will play." - I hear this phrase all the time. The truth is neither you nor I know who will play but I can guarantee you at least 80% will want to ‘have a go’ and experience playing blackjack, roulette, etc, without any financial risk. Some people will head straight for the roulette table while some will spend an hour chatting before wandering over to blackjack. That's exactly why every guest receives fun money, because by giving everyone the chance to play, I know the tables will comfortably accommodate everyone over the course of the three hours casino time. If somebody in the minority decides they aren't interested, they can simply pass their fun money to someone else. Nobody misses out, fun money is the perfect way to ensure that.

Time Is Just as Important as Guest Numbers

When I recommend the number of tables, I'm assuming the casino will be open for the standard three hours, although that time can be lengthened. Consider if there will be speeches, awards, an auction, a charity raffle. These can overrun and suddenly your casino might only be running for two hours. If you've got exactly the same number of guests but one less hour for them to play, another table often makes perfect sense. This is why experience matters, it's never just about guest numbers.

The Christmas Party That Went Too Far...

One enquiry has stayed with me for years. A company was organising a casino-themed Christmas party for 800 guests. Initially they booked eight casino tables but later they reduced it to six. I could make that work, everyone has a budget. I explained we would need to restrict the number of chips we gave guests so the croupiers were not overwhelmed. Then they reduced it again to four tables - this was going to be an extremely busy night on the tables. Finally they asked if one table would do, for 800 people. At that point I politely declined the booking for more than one reason. My reputation depends on guests having a fantastic evening, and one croupier surrounded by hundreds of frustrated guests isn't entertainment, it would definitely descend into chaos. I also have a duty of care to my staff. Imagine giving all 800 guests a drink token and having one bar and one barman?! As Mock Vegas is so busy at weekends in December I also operate a two table minimum booking on those dates, but even then two tables would be vastly insufficient in this case. Sometimes the most professional answer is unfortunately politely saying, "No."

More Tables Doesn't Mean Wasted Money

Occasionally clients want a wider variety of games rather than simply increasing capacity and that's absolutely fine, of course. In fact it makes for a really relaxed atmosphere with easy access to the tables. For example, if you decide to have blackjack, roulette, poker and craps because you'd like guests to experience different games, we'll simply issue more fun money to keep everyone entertained. It's a simple adjustment that gives excellent value without overcrowding any table.

Which Casino Games Are Best?

People often ask me which games can accommodate the most players. That's actually the wrong question to ask because players don't all leave a table at the same moment. Instead, think about achieving the atmosphere you want. Someone betting everything on red might lose in seconds whereas someone else might spend time getting into the game, learning different bets and enjoying every spin. If someone wishes to leave the table we ask them to 'cash out'. They receive a cheque to the value of their chips. They can use that cheque later on any table, so guests come and go as they please. It's very relaxed. For events that promise to be busy I always recommend blackjack and roulette . They're quick to learn, easy to play and create lots of energy. What about poker and craps? They are fantastic games but they take longer to explain properly. However if you have plenty of space, lots of tables or perhaps a quieter room away from the music, they can be an excellent addition.

When Fewer Guests Turned Into More Fun

Recently we provided casino tables for a promotional event in Central London. Industrial action on public transport meant attendance was going to be lower than expected. Rather than let that spoil the evening, we suggested the client hand every guest two fun money notes when they arrived. If numbers stayed low, guests simply received more fun money later.

All evening the tables stayed busy, the guests loved it, staying longer to talk to their company staff and the client attracted plenty of new business.

Experience has taught me it isn't just about planning, it's adapting when the unexpected happens.

What If More Guests Arrive?

Thankfully, there's a little flexibility built into every event. We can recycle fun money that's already been handed in by earlier players. That usually helps accommodate unexpected arrivals. However, if guest numbers are significantly higher than planned, eventually there simply won't be enough table space. That's another reason why getting reasonably accurate numbers beforehand is worthwhile.

Space Matters Too

Whether your event is in a luxury hotel, village hall or your own home, I always use the same comparison. For each table, look at the space and imagine a large single bed with people standing around all four sides. That's roughly the space each casino table needs. If you're having three or more tables, I nearly always recommend creating what real casinos call a pit. Ever heard the term ‘Pit Boss’? Instead of lining the tables around the walls, arrange them together as a circle in the centre of the room (see images). This will boost the atmosphere and is why real casinos use this arrangement. When players cheer at one table, everyone else instantly looks across unhindered to see who is celebrating a win. Otherwise they will be looking around, trying to see through the crowd to the other side of the room.

The Three Questions I Always Ask

I ask every enquiry the same three questions.

What date are you considering?
Where is the event?
Approximately how many guests are attending?

Those three answers tell me almost everything I need to know. From there I can recommend packages, games, options and prices.

You don't need any strategy, all you need is a handful of chips, a spinning wheel and the hope that a tiny white ball lands where you've bet. It is a very simple game with different levels of risk (and payouts).

Having spent decades dealing roulette in real casinos before running Mock Vegas fun casino events across London and Southern England, I've introduced literally thousands of complete beginners to the game. One thing I've learnt is that people often think roulette looks far more complicated than it really is. You can be enjoying your very first spin within a couple of minutes. Here’s how;

How Does Roulette Work?

Players place chips on a betting layout while the croupier spins the wheel one way and launches the ball in the opposite direction. When the croupier calls "No more bets!", betting stops and everyone waits to see where the ball lands. If your bet covers the winning number, colour or section of the layout, you win.

Roulette offers something for everyone. You can make low-risk bets that are easier to win but have smaller payouts, or high-risk bets that are much harder to hit but can produce spectacular payouts.

For example:

Bet directly on a single number, the highest risk bet, it pays 35 to 1. If you bet on Red or Black, one of the lowest risk bets, it pays even money (1 to 1). That's why roulette is so exciting. Every player can choose how adventurous they want to be.

Understanding the Roulette Betting Layout

The betting layout may look intimidating at first, lots of numbers and boxes, but it's actually very logical.

The Outside Bets – Perfect for Beginners

The easiest bets are around the outside edge of the numbered grid. These include red and black, odd and even numbers, low numbers (1–18) and high numbers (19–36). These self-explanatory and pay 1:1 or even money – bet one chip and you will win one chip.

There are also the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dozens. If you place a chip on the 2nd Dozen for example, you're betting that the winning number will be between 13 and 24. These bets pay 2:1, bet one chip and you will win two chips.

They're ideal for beginners because they're simple to understand and win more frequently than betting on individual numbers.

The Numbers – Bigger Risk, Bigger Rewards

The Biggest Mistakes Beginners Make

After thousands of roulette spins I’ve seen very typical mistakes appear again and again, such as only betting on red or black. It is popular because they're easy but you will miss out on better fun. I always encourage guests to put one or two chips on the numbers too. It doesn’t matter where - your birthday, your house number, your lottery number. The look on someone's face when they've forgotten they put one lonely chip on Number 17 and I push 35 chips towards them is priceless. Then the comments like, “How on Earth did you do that?!” and I explain, "I did tell you that's what would happen when we started!"

Forgetting about zero is another mistake. For some reason people may think you’re not allowed to bet on it, it seems to have an almost mythical status and many players avoid it completely. It's just another number! It has exactly the same chance of appearing as every other number in the wheel and pays exactly the same 35:1 if you bet on it directly.

Cancelling out your own bets is very common. Some think it is a strategy betting one chip on red and another on black. Unfortunately, it isn't much of one because if red wins, your losing chip on black will pay your red winner. If black wins, your losing chip on red pays your black winner. You've won nothing. And when Zero comes up, you lose both bets. Your strategy is a way of losing very slowly!

Someone stating, "You can't bet while the ball Is spinning!" is another misconception. They may even physically stops another player from placing a bet because they believe betting must stop as soon as the ball is launched. That’s not true, you can continue placing bets while the ball is spinning. The croupier will tell everyone exactly when betting closes by calling, "No more bets!" Until then anyone can bet away.

How We Teach Roulette at Mock Vegas

The advantage of booking Mock Vegas professional croupiers is that you don't need to know anything beforehand. The first thing we explain is that each player receives their own colour chips. Although every chip has the same value, different colours allow us to identify whose bets belong to whom. We then demonstrate a few simple outside bets before encouraging guests to be a little adventurous because one chip on your lucky number could become thirty-five.

Common Roulette Myths

I've heard almost every roulette myth imaginable. "The wheel Is rigged with magnets." No it isn’t. They are not in real casinos and they are not at Mock Vegas. Real casinos don't need to cheat, the mathematics already favour the house. The more games they deal, the more profit they expect to make. That's how real casinos exist.

"The dealer can make the ball land wherever they want." Another myth but with an element of truth. In a permanent casino, where a precision made roulette wheel is levelled, checked and maintained every day, an exceptionally skilled croupier might reach a particular section of the wheel, but even then it’s 50/50 at best. At Mock Vegas our authentic casino equipment is transported to venues across London and Southern England every week. It is assembled, dismantled and moved constantly. Even if a croupier wanted to influence the outcome, the conditions simply aren't comparable to a permanently installed casino wheel.

I keep explaining, we are not out to cheat you out of your pretend money!

Funny Roulette Stories from Behind the Wheel

Working in casinos for decades means you collect stories, lots of them. One disgruntled player lost his stake money. In an act of revenge, just after the croupier spun the ball, the player reached into the wheel, interrupted the spin, picked the ball up and swallowed it. I'm still not entirely sure what he thought he'd achieved but we let him keep the ball.

Another involved a trainee croupier, otherwise known as a ‘lumpy’ dealer, because they’re not smooth. Instead of launching the roulette ball smoothly around the wheel, it flew in a majestic arch down the length of the table and landed perfectly inside a lady's cleavage. Great catch!

Perhaps the most fascinating involved an organised gang attempting what's known as a "Top Hat" scam using stolen chips and split-second timing. About four punters were out to cheat the casino and use other unwitting players to help. It worked like this – someone steals a couple of chips from an innocent punter. They then palm those chips along with a couple of high value chips another in the gang had legitimately bought and passed to them. After the croupier has announced, ‘No more bets!’ and the ball has dropped into the winning number, a millisecond later the gang member with the chips places them on that winning number. Now that table may be covered with chips, there is no way anybody could remember what chip was where when the ball dropped. The croupier announces, ‘No bet!’. The croupier then removes the bet, but only the stolen chips thinking that was all that was placed. The high value chips are a different colour. The legitimate owner of chips admits they are his but looks bewildered, he didn’t place that bet. Meanwhile, the gang await their payout for the high value chips. I was supervising this table. I didn’t know exactly what had happened but from the bewildered player and the body language from the gang I knew something was wrong. I told the croupier to clear the winning number but not to pay out anything. One by one, the gang left the casino. The pit boss got onto the camera room who revised the video and found out what happened. By that time the whole gang was long gone. They hadn’t got away with it, in fact their ‘investment’ was lost. Two weeks alter I was supervising roulette again when a kerfuffle happened on the next table. I suspected the same thing had happened. Sure enough, it had! I couldn’t believe this gang – the same tables, the same time of day, the same supervisors?! I don’t know if that is bravado or stupidity! The gang disappeared empty-handed again.

Roulette Etiquette Everyone Should Know

Professional casinos have etiquette for good reasons, it keeps the game fair and enjoyable for all the players.

A few simple rules:

Never pick up winning chips before the croupier has paid out. You could be suspected of adding chips!

Don't throw chips onto the layout. They may move another player's chip or just roll off the table.

Avoid dumping untidy piles of chips onto betting areas. It takes up unnecessary space and prevents other players placing chips on the same bet.

When cashing in, don't push a messy mountain of loose chips at the croupier. I know they do it on films and TV but it’s bad form, old boy. If you're unsure how to move them, simply ask the croupier. We're happy to help.

If you're unsure whether betting is allowed, wait until the marker (called the dolly) has been removed from the previous winning number.

One of the questions I'm occasionally asked when discussing a booking is "Can we play for real money?" The answer is very simple. No! Absolutely not! After decades working in real casinos and running Mock Vegas fun casino events across London and Southern England, I can assure you that playing for real money at a wedding, party, charity event or corporate function is not something you should even consider.

The good news is that you don't need real money involved to create all the excitement, competition and atmosphere of a genuine casino night. In many ways, a fun casino is actually better and I can explain why.

Why Can't We Play for Real Money?

Many people assume that if it's a private event among friends, colleagues or family members, a small wager wouldn't matter. Well it very much does, that's not how casino gaming law works in the UK. Real casinos operate under very strict regulations – premises have to licensed, operators have to be licensed, the croupiers and security staff have to be licensed, security and CCTV needs to be in place, responsible gambling policies in place for problem gamblers, approved equipment checked at least every 24 hours, and there are snap inspections by the Gambling Commission. It doesn’t stop there, there are also requirements regarding gaming and non-gaming floor space and customer identification procedures.

A fun casino event doesn't operate under those rules because it isn't gambling, it's entertainment, like playing board games at home. That's an important distinction.

Very rarely I have seen guests bet between themselves on an outcome. I have stopped the game immediately and explained why they can not do that - the consequences for Mock Vegas, the host and venue are severe. It is in the Mock Vegas Terms and Conditions that if guests are observed using real money that the fun casino would be shut down, equipment dismantled and removed with no refund. It is that serious!

A Conversation I'll Never Forget

One prospective client once telephoned me with what he thought was a brilliant idea. He wanted a casino night using real money. I explained that this would be thoroughly illegal. He replied that he had a letter from a solicitor saying it would be legal. I told him I'd be fascinated to see this letter from what sounded like a very badly informed solicitor. I never received it.

I asked him, “Out of curiosity, who would pay the winners?" His answer was that he intended to put £2,000 behind each table. I told him that wouldn’t be nearly enough and that the biggest winner Mock Vegas has ever seen accumulated around 130,000 in chips during a fun casino event. I asked, “Who would be paying that, because it won’t be me?” He went very quiet.

I then explained another problem. In a real casino, equipment is checked constantly. Roulette wheels are levelled and inspected, cards are examined front and back, dice are measured with a square and micrometre. If anyone bet real cash on equipment that isn't regulated would be naïve or mad!

Even if you got past all that, if there was a dispute and someone reported the event the host would face prosecution, the venue would face prosecution and lose its licences, and I would face prosecution.

I pointed out to him that by far the simplest solution would be to go to a real casino!

I never heard back from him.

In this modern world of price > pay here> it arrives on your doorstep, in contrast an event with many variables is difficult to price immediately. The key is getting the right number of tables, the right games, the right atmosphere for your guests and, of course, everyone has a budget.

So What Affects the Cost of Fun Casino Hire?

We need to know three things – location, the date and the number of guests.

Location

An event in a hotel close to base in Surrey or Hampshire will cost less than one in Central London where parking, congestion and access can be challenging.

The Date

The Number of Guests

What’s the biggest mistake in blackjack?

That’s easy to answer - trying to get 21 every hand. Players taking another card on 18, 19, which are already pretty decent hands. The dealer must keep taking cards until they reach at least 17. So if the dealer’s card (the one in front of them) is 4, 5 or especially 6 that is good news for you, there’s a very good chance they will bust.

What does ‘split’ mean?

When Should You Split? Remember - look at the dealer’s card. If they have that terrible card, 4, 5, or 6 they are on course to bust. That’s a great time to split your cards, and if they do bust you win double!

There is a special rule about splitting aces. You only receive one card on each ace. That’s it, you can’t have any more. If you happen to get a 10 on one or both of those aces they are not blackjack, they count as 21. Blackjack is only with your first two cards. That means if the dealer gets a blackjack themselves they have beaten your 21’s.

Never Split 10’s! At almost every blackjack table there’s somebody getting excited on your behalf and shouting, “Split them! You’ve got to split them!” No, you haven’t. What does ‘double down’ mean?

When should you double down?

A true real casino story about blackjack frustration.

Here’s a true story from my years working in a real casino - a player was having unbelievably bad luck. He would double down and get 20, but the dealer would get 21. He would split, and then bust both hands. This happened again and again, relentlessly. Finally he had 21….and then the dealer got blackjack. He’d had enough. In frustration he grabbed the dealer’s cards and tried ripping them in half. He struggled but he couldn’t because casino grade plastic cards are incredibly tough (the same type we use at Mock Vegas events). He threw the crumpled cards on the table and walked out.

Next day he returned. A new day could bring new, fresh luck. Nope. It was a repeat of the previous day. He would double down and get 20 again, the dealer got 21 again. Split aces, get two bad cards, the dealer won with only 17. Again, it got too much. He took the dealer’s cards, produced a pair of scissors from a pocket, and snipped them in half.

So remember, if you want to improve your chances of winning;

1. Look at the dealer’s card - a weak dealer card improves their chance of busting.

2. You are not trying to beat the dealer - let the dealer bust.

3. There are more high cards than low cards – assume the next card is a high one.

You beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 than they have. You win even money (bet 10 and win another 10).

If you go over 21 you have ‘bust’ and you lose your hand and your bet immediately.

Number cards are face value, all the picture cards are 10, an ace is 1 OR 11.

A ‘blackjack’ hand, the very best you can have, is an ace and any 10-value card.

Blackjack pays 3 to 2, or 1.5 times your bet (bet 10 and you win 15)

However, if the dealer also gets blackjack too then it’s a tie, a ‘standoff’. This happens any time your hand is the same as the dealer’s. For example, if you have 19 and the dealer also has 19. You don’t win and you don’t lose, your bet simply stays there for the next hand.

After years dealing blackjack I have seen beginners usually making the same mistakes;

1. You can tell they’re thinking, “Got to get to 21, got to get to 21……”. No you don’t! If you have 18 and the dealer has 17, you win!

2. Taking too many cards - if you already have 17 or more, just leave it. The chances of improving that hand are minimal. Bear in mind there are more high cards than low cards in a deck.

3. Thinking you’re playing against everyone else - you’re not. Every player is trying to beat the dealer.

How do I ask for another card, or stop if I don’t want one?

First of all, a couple of don'ts;

Please don’t say, “Hit me”. That’s only for films and TV. You’d be laughed at in a real casino, and besides you’ll get fed up saying it.

Please don’t say ‘stick’ or ‘twist’. We are playing the grown-up version! Can you imagine James Bond playing blackjack in Casino Royale and saying, “Twist”? It just doesn’t fit, does it! In any case, it’s usually noisy in a party atmosphere, so ‘stick’ can sound like ‘hit’, the exact opposite of what you want to do.

So let’s make it simple and visual – if you want a card, tap the table behind your box. If you don’t want another card, wave your hand behind your box. It's pretty much how it's done in a real casino.

In fact spinning a roulette ball properly is a genuine skill. It’s only one aspect in the two weeks of full time roulette training needed to deal in a real casino, and even more time to perfect.

At corporate events and private parties we are often asked “Can I have a go at spinning the ball?” and that sounds simple enough until it’s explained what’s actually involved. A professional roulette spin is NOT spinning the wheel wildly, as fast as possible, throwing the ball as hard as possible and hoping for the best. It is actually about timing, consistency, wheel speed and technique. The casino grade roulette balls used in Mock Vegas fun casinos are not cheap. Professional roulette balls are perfectly spherical and made from a slippery specialist material. They are designed for long, smooth spins and do not damage the wheel rim as something like a marble would do. Because roulette balls are small, slippery and usually used in dimly lit party venues when one does escape it can disappear never to be seen again.

The secret to a good roulette spin is a bit technical. The wheel speed matters - too slow and players may predict where the ball could land more easily. Too fast and the ball just smashes around the wheel like a tennis ball in a tumble dryer. It can even bounce out of the wheel, fling across the room and vanish under a table (or worse… more on that shortly).

The roulette wheel and ball always spin in opposite directions and qualify as a spin the ball must travel around the wheel at least four times. The hardest part is launching the ball. But that’s not all – they have to be able to do that with either hand, in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions whilst feeling under pressure if it’s a busy game or there is a big punter playing on the table.

“No Spin!” — When Things Go Wrong

Even professional croupiers can make mistakes. Fingers can get in a muddle and the ball is dropped instead of launched. If the wheel is going too fast the ball can escape the wheel and go flying down the betting layout. I’ve seen the ball go straight down a lady’s cleavage on more than one occasion and another time it landed perfectly inside a gentleman’s spectacles between his eye and the lens - nobody was hurt and everybody saw the funny side of such a freak accident.

Spinning the ball is only a small part of a roulette dealer’s job. They need to do complex mental arithmetic under pressure, know their picture bets, neighbour bets and the sections of the wheel - Voisins de Zero, the Orphans and Tier.

Also, avoid ‘the biggest loser’. It sounds fun but logically everyone starts with the same amount, so they would have lost the same amount. Potentially, if you have 100 guests and one winner, the other 99 guests lost their fun money, so that’s 99 ‘biggest loser’ prizes you will need! A better idea is to have the ’Unluckiest player’. You can organise your own fun money but please be aware that printing notes like “10,000” sounds fun but it breaks the system and confuses guests. Notes marked 50 or 100 works much better. It calibrates with the chip values on the tables.

How can I get the best entertainment value

from my fun casino?

Mock Vegas staff have decades of experience in real casinos as croupiers and supervisors and have been hosting and running fun casino nights for 17 years. We run fun casinos with those professional croupiers dealing on the tables. We have organised fun casinos for birthday parties, fundraisers, corporate events , and weddings - literally hundreds of casino nights.

Rather than just sell you casino games , we advise which games will be best for your event. Some do not work well in very loud environments, such as the DJ, and some are rather slow so not every guest has a chance to play - we want you to get the best entertainment value from your casino night. The croupiers are friendly and welcoming and will explain the rules of the games. Depending on the game you can have eight, nine or ten players at a table and we can advise how many tables you would need over the three hours for the number of guests at your event so everyone has a chance to play. It is very relaxed - players are asked to cash in their chips as they leave a table, they receive a cheque, they can go for a dance and then use their cheque to play again at any table. Guests come and go from your casino as they please.

The two games we always recommend are blackjack and roulette. They are easy games to learn and play very quickly. We have other games such as the Wheel of Fortune, Casino Stud Poker, Craps and Texas Hold'em Poker.

Some games do not work very well with loud music. Craps is a complicated game but we do simplify it and it works well at small, quieter events. Texas Hold'em Poker, such as you see on TV and films, is a slow game again played at quieter events. When James Bond was playing Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, Taylor Swift was not banging out 'Shake It Off' in the background!

The usual scenario for a fun casino night is that we will arrive and set up your casino tables before guests arrive. Your guests will receive fun money, so everyone starts with the same amount. It's a competition to see who can be the luckiest with their fun money. Players can move between tables, but we ask them to cash out from each table as we need those chips on those tables. Their cashing out cheque also helps us find the prize winners. At the end of the night, we will find your luckiest player or players and inform you so they can be presented with a prize.

Often guests ask throughout the night, who is winning?! The winner will be the one with the most value in chips at the very end of the three hour casino. It will not be decided until the very last turn of a card or the last spin of the ball on the roulette table. Sometimes we can advise how a player can be the winner on the very last spin.

If you are running a fundraiser for charity, for instance, a good way to raise funds would be to ask for a donation in exchange for fun money and to give guests a good deal. For example, if you sold one fun money note, which is worth 20 chips at the tables, for £5, but a £10 donation gets three notes worth 60 chips - much the better deal. It is a good idea to have a cashier for your collecting the funds and giving the guests their fun money to play at the tables.
