Can guests play for real money at a fun casino?

Learn why fun casino hire uses chips and fun money for safe, legal entertainment.

One of the questions I'm occasionally asked when discussing a booking is "Can we play for real money?" The answer is very simple. No! Absolutely not! After decades working in real casinos and running Mock Vegas fun casino events across London and Southern England, I can assure you that playing for real money at a wedding, party, charity event or corporate function is not something you should even consider.

The good news is that you don't need real money involved to create all the excitement, competition and atmosphere of a genuine casino night. In many ways, a fun casino is actually better and I can explain why.

Why Can't We Play for Real Money?

Many people assume that if it's a private event among friends, colleagues or family members, a small wager wouldn't matter. Well it very much does, that's not how casino gaming law works in the UK. Real casinos operate under very strict regulations – premises have to licensed, operators have to be licensed, the croupiers and security staff have to be licensed, security and CCTV needs to be in place, responsible gambling policies in place for problem gamblers, approved equipment checked at least every 24 hours, and there are snap inspections by the Gambling Commission. It doesn’t stop there, there are also requirements regarding gaming and non-gaming floor space and customer identification procedures.

A fun casino event doesn't operate under those rules because it isn't gambling, it's entertainment, like playing board games at home. That's an important distinction.

Very rarely I have seen guests bet between themselves on an outcome. I have stopped the game immediately and explained why they can not do that - the consequences for Mock Vegas, the host and venue are severe. It is in the Mock Vegas Terms and Conditions that if guests are observed using real money that the fun casino would be shut down, equipment dismantled and removed with no refund. It is that serious!

A Conversation I'll Never Forget

One prospective client once telephoned me with what he thought was a brilliant idea. He wanted a casino night using real money. I explained that this would be thoroughly illegal. He replied that he had a letter from a solicitor saying it would be legal. I told him I'd be fascinated to see this letter from what sounded like a very badly informed solicitor. I never received it.

I asked him, “Out of curiosity, who would pay the winners?" His answer was that he intended to put £2,000 behind each table. I told him that wouldn’t be nearly enough and that the biggest winner Mock Vegas has ever seen accumulated around 130,000 in chips during a fun casino event. I asked, “Who would be paying that, because it won’t be me?” He went very quiet.

I then explained another problem. In a real casino, equipment is checked constantly. Roulette wheels are levelled and inspected, cards are examined front and back, dice are measured with a square and micrometre. At Mock Vegas, our equipment is authentic, professional and high quality, but it isn't inspected to those standards because nobody is risking real money. If anyone bet real cash on equipment that isn't regulated would be naïve or mad!

Even if you got past all that, if there was a dispute and someone reported the event the host would face prosecution, the venue would face prosecution and lose its licences, and I would face prosecution.

I pointed out to him that by far the simplest solution would be to go to a real casino!

I never heard back from him.

So How Does a Fun Casino Work?

This is where Mock Vegas comes into its own. Guests receive fun money instead of risking real cash, that fun money is exchanged for chips at the casino tables, from that point onwards the experience feels remarkably authentic, there is no difference to a real casino in the way the games operate. The roulette wheel spins, the blackjack cards are dealt, the croupiers deal the games exactly as they would in a real casino.

The very important difference is that nobody is risking their mortgage payment so the evening becomes a friendly competition - who can win the most chips? Who will be the luckiest with their fun money? That creates all the excitement without any of the financial risk.

Is It Still Exciting Without Real Money?

Of course! In fact, many guests forget they're playing with fun money, the experience feels real because they are real casino games with authentic tables and equipment. All Mock Vegas croupiers have genuine casino experience. We rope off croupier work areas and lamps on the tables mean everyone can clearly follow the action.

A very common comments I hear is, "If only it was real money!" I reply, "People only say that when they're winning!" Nobody ever says it after losing all their chips.

Why Fun Casinos Are Actually Better Than Real Casinos

Having spent decades in both environments I can confidently state there is a huge difference in atmosphere. In a real casino the punters often sit expressionless, silent in their bubble of concentration on their system. Some become tetchy if their bubble is burst, they are focused solely on their own game.

A Mock Vegas fun casino turns that on it’s head – every guest enjoys the games, they even laugh if they lose! They are talking to each other, asking how the games work, what may be a good bet, who has the most chips so far? It’s a social event, that's why fun casino hire works so well for weddings, corporate entertainment, Christmas parties and charity events.

What About Prizes?

At the end of the evening, the luckiest player can receive a prize. I always recommend keeping prizes modest, even just a bottle of prosecco works perfectly. It looks the part and it is all just for fun. If generous or valuable prizes are offered the atmosphere changes. Guests become overly competitive, even try to bend the rules They spend too much time at the tables, ignoring partners who may want to dance or involve them in a conversation with friends, they stop socialising.

The prize is simply the icing on the cake. A little recognition for someone who has been lucky on the night.
